Open history with appropriate access

Google’s help page states that permission to edit is required to browse earlier versions. In an open document, Last edit leads to the history view, where the version panel shows changes and contributors. Expand grouped versions when a more detailed view is needed. This is useful for understanding how the document developed, rather than relying only on the appearance of the current text.

Choose restoration, copying, or naming deliberately

Select an earlier version and use Restore this version when that state should become current. Alternatively, Make a copy creates a separate file based on an earlier state, with a chosen name and destination. Naming a version identifies a meaningful checkpoint and makes it easier to locate later. Inspect the selected state before restoring it, because a historical draft may omit useful changes that were added after that point.
